The firm was started by a group of experienced Silicon Valley patent attorneys from the San Jose law firm of Skjerven Morrill MacPherson. The attorneys of the firm wanted to focus their practices on technologies and clients that were most compatible with their backgrounds and to offer those clients attentive, personalized, and efficient service. Their skills in patent prosecution, patent portfolio management, invention incentive programs, and patent litigation were acquired by a combination of industry experience and "big firm" experience at Skjerven.
